Settled in the 1840s, Dallas has a relatively short history. However, a curious visitor can come across traces of that history in the most unexpected places.
Take the Pioneer Cemetery for example. This green oasis is located next to the Convention Center in downtown Dallas. According to the historical marker, the remnants of four early graveyards make up the present cemetery. It contains the graves of early settlers and civic leaders.
Perhaps its most distinctive feature is the Confederate War Memorial erected in the late 1890s. The monument remembers those who fought on the Confederate army during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
