Roast. The name of this restaurant makes my heart flutter. Roast beef. Roast pork belly. Roast chicken. Roast potatoes. Roastly goodness all round.
I came across Roast quite by chance, looking for a nice restaurant in London. I looked at their menu online and knew we had to try it. I made a reservation for two and waited until Saturday night.
Roast is located inside Borough Market, London’s best, in my opinion, food market. That is surely a good sign. By the time we arrived, the market stalls were closed. We wandered a bit among the ghostly scent of cheese, truffles, Serrano hams, olive oils, bread, and fresh produce.
We took the lift to the first floor. Two lovely receptionists took our coats and led us to our table. We were seated in the bar area, next to the windows. However, the table was too low for my tall husband, so we requested another table. Not a problem. They seated us in the main restaurant. We had great views of the neighbourhood below and St. Paul’s dome beyond the railway tracks.
The bar divides the bar area from the main dining room. It’s all very modern and very spacious. I could go on about the décor and ambiance but I know you want to know about the food.
I ordered the soup of the day: asparagus, creamy and delicious. Sean had the Scotch egg with Lorne sausage and piccalilli, also very good and cooked well.
I popped my beef Wellington cherry. And yes, the earth moved for me. Fillet of beef Wellington is Saturday’s special and it comes with roast potatoes. The beef came medium rare, which is as rare as I can stomach meat. The mushroom paste had lots of flavor but didn’t overpower the beef.
Sean had the pork belly with mashed potato and Bramley apple sauce. The pork belly melted in the mouth. Sheer bliss.
Sean had the Bramley apple and rhubarb crumble tart with English vanilla custard and I had the Bakewell tart with pear butter and pouring cream. Both were delightful.
Attentive and friendly.
Their motto is “Deliciously British.” I couldn’t agree more.
Disclaimer: I wasn’t comped a meal nor was I given anything in return for this review. The folks at Roast don’t even know I’m writing this! I wanted to show that there is great food in London.
